Thirty-one year old driver Mike McCollum's life has always focused around his love of racing.
His obsession began as child as a spectator and has grown
into a full-fledged driving career. He is a second
generation racer as his father, Paul McCollum, previously
piloted the #2 Sportsman at Lake Moc-A-Tek Speedway in the
late 90's.
In his early 20’s, McCollum had a battle with lymph node
cancer that limited his racing career. But, in 2003, he
overcame cancer and returned to the racing seen full time
calling the now defunct Lake Moc-A-Tek Speedway
home. That same year the young talent grabbed his first
career feature win on July 26th. This win gave him the
confidence to continue on in his racing endeavors.
In 2004, McCollum became
the final Sportsman Modified feature winner at the same
speedway he grabbed his first win. The win was bittersweet as
days later the Lake Moc-A-Tek Speedway was closed indefinitely
due to a court
order.
McCollum, a proven
winner, has added new tracks to his list as he made appearances
at Susquehanna’s Penn Can Speedway and Center Lisle, NY’s
Thunder Mountain Speedway as well as Orange County Fair
Speedway’s Eastern States weekend. In 2006, McCollum
was a regular Friday night runner at The New Afton Speedway
where he saw improved results throughout the season, ending
with 2 top 10 finishes and a 10th place point finish in the
358 Modified division.
2007 was a busy year for McCollum. He continued racing in the New York's
Southern Tier and got married in October, 2007.
He carries on his family racing tradition with his father Paul
acting as crew chief and looks forward to a successful season
in 2008. |
